Integrated Research Programme

Building Research Acumen and Gaining Practical Skills

About the programme

The Integrated Research Programme (IRP: BRAGPS) is a comprehensive nine-month course that focuses on the world of research, designed to equip you with both foundational and advanced research knowledge and skills. This course provides step-by-step guidance on research, covering everything from understanding what research truly is to mastering the art of data analysis.

At the end of the programme, you will have not only developed a deep understanding of the research process but also achieved the significant milestone of having your own research paper published.

This programme is open to students, experienced researchers, and passionate enthusiasts alike—anyone eager to explore the empirical world of research, guided by expert mentorship and designed to foster both curiosity and competence. It’s an opportunity to carve your name in the field of research with authorship of your own published work. It's more than just learning; it's about transforming ideas into impactful, published work that stands at the frontier of knowledge.

Learning outcomes

Research is not simply a credential to add to your hat of achievements. It is a commitment to contribute to your work and field. It shows mastery and command over your topic. Through this course, you will learn:

  • The different aspects of research (abstract, literature review, methodology, data collection and interpretation, and source citation).

  • How to identify and fine-tune a topic.

  • How to read and review existing literature to identify the gaps in research.

  • The right approach to research (research design) for choosing the variables and conducting accurate research.

  • How to analyse and interpret the collected data (whether qualitative or quantitative).

  • Accurate citation of sources to avoid plagiarism, and increasing chances of publication.

"When you can do a common thing in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world."

- George Washington Carver

Syllabus

Pre-work {20 hours}

In this module, you will learn:

  • What is research

    • Choosing the right research tools

    • What are research tools

    • Choosing the right tool based on research design: qualitative vs quantitative research

  • Research management

    • Research software

    • Storing literature

  • Ethics in research

    • Ethical practices

    • COPE guidelines

    • Maintaining research integrity

  • Components of a research paper

    • Reviewing existing literature to identify gaps

    • Understanding different research design

    • Choosing accurate data collection

    • Exploring research variable and their operational definitions

  • Rules of citation

    • Referencing and citation rules

    • Identifying citations

    • Writing citations

    • Eliciting citations

  • Pre-reads

    • Independent excerpts and reading material

  • Each of the above pre-work topic comes with intext questions (MCQs or subjective based on the nature of the topic). These are merely indicative, and not for evaluation purposes.

  • There would be a 50-mark final paper at the end of the pre-work. Again, this would be merely indicative, and not for evaluation purposes.

  • The pre-work and its assessments are required to attend this Integrated Research Programme.

Class Syllabus {30 hours}

  • Module 1: Foundations of Research Methodology

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of research, equipping students with the skills needed to conceptualise, design, and propose a research project. Covering key aspects such as referencing rules, topic selection, proposal writing, literature review, and research design, it offers a strong foundation for conducting methodologically sound research. By the end of the module, participants will learn to identify gaps, choose variables, and accurately cite references, thereby initiating and managing their research journey effectively.

  • Module 2: Advanced Techniques in Research Methodology and Data Analysis

This module focuses on the finer details of research methodology, offering a detailed understanding of research design, hypothesis framing, and data collection techniques. Students will learn advanced approaches to analysing both quantitative data, qualitative data and mixed-methods data, alongside exploring statistical techniques essential for rigorous research. The main focus will be the interpretation of data, drawing meaningful conclusions, and addressing future research possibilities, helping students to produce methodologically sound and statistically robust studies.

  • Module 3: The Science of Research Writing

This module focuses on the essential skills for reading, analysing, and writing research papers. Students will explore the structure, components, and technical guidelines for crafting well-organised research manuscripts while adhering to ethical standards like SAGER and avoiding plagiarism. Additionally, this module will teach how to manage data and balance original insights with existing literature to ensure effective academic publishing.

  • Module 4: Bringing Technology in Research

This module introduces the effective use of technology and software in research, including tools like Excel, SPSS, Mendeley, and Zotero for data analysis and management. Students will learn referencing styles and the integration of artificial intelligence in research workflows to enhance research efficiency and accuracy.

  • Module 5: Navigating the Publication Journey

This module covers the essentials of publishing research, from selecting the right journal to understanding the ethics of scientific publishing. Students will understand strategies for publishing in premium journals, avoiding misconduct, and seeking mentorship when needed.

At the end of each module, supervised skill tests and integration would be conducted to understand and enhance the learning experience. These evaluation processes are essential and will add to the final credits in the certificate.

Evaluation

  • Written assignment (objective)

  • Literature review

  • Technical knowledge

Please note: IJNGP conducts research according to the updated APA (American Psychology Association; 7th edition) guidelines, and ensures the accuracy of knowledge and participation of human data according to the latest COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines. Any breach in the guidelines, presentation of inaccurate/fabricated data, or any harm to human participants is strictly against our course and publication guidelines. Strict action will be taken if any breach is observed.

Skills Lab

  • Write a technically sound research proposal for committee approval.

  • Structure an academic research paper.

  • Identify gaps in existing literature and identify the best strategy for your research work.

  • Accurate decision of research methodology and design.

  • Presentation of an academic research manuscript for publication consideration.

  • Target the right journal for increased chances of publication.
