Clients often come for counselling because they feel overwhelmed, disconnected with others, themselves or with life itself, and every other avenue that people access to give meaning to their lives becomes unavailable to them. They may feel stuck in spirals, in a life without meaning. The process of counselling is thus the collaborative journey of discovery of the client’s truth and meaning. It should constitute an empathic conversation between two competent people, that takes place in an atmosphere of acceptance, respect and trust wherein counsellors work with clients' confidentiality to help them understand themselves, their behaviours, feelings and relationships, and thereby gain access to more choice points and opportunities. While counseling theories are rooted in empirical research and offer valuable frameworks, theoretical knowledge alone is insufficient for effective practice. True competence in counseling comes from the ability to apply these theories in real-world scenarios. It requires not just understanding concepts but also developing the skills to engage deeply with clients, to listen and respond with empathy, and to create an environment where growth could occur. To fully grasp how counseling unfolds, it’s essential to observe and practice these skills in action. Watch the following videos to deepen your understanding and see the practical dynamics at play.
